With busy schedules, it is hard to find a time when everyone can gather for prayer. However, wait and make the time for this. Don’t fall for the trap of, “Let’s just do it without him or her. It’s easier that way.” Just because it may be easier doesn’t mean its best. In fact, often the easier path is usually not the right path. Encourage everyone to participate even if it is via phone, Internet, or silently standing with you.

Anticipate and celebrate diversity. What works with one child may not work with another. If you have children of different ages, be willing to enjoy and try new kinds of prayers to meet the differences of everyone in the family. Probably the number one reason why most parents do not engage in leading family devotions is the fear that their child will ask a question that they don’t know how to answer. Well let me handle this as gently as I can. Get over it and get used to it! Was that gentle enough? Seriously, are you kidding me? I’m a pastor who has had years of seminary training and I get asked questions by my daughter all the time that I can’t answer. In fact, those are some of our best devotional times. Times when we have to wrestle with something we don’t understand about God or how He works or something scripture says. I hope I’m not the first to tell you this but as a Christian, here on earth; you are never going to have all the answers. For me, family devotions are not as much about getting answers as they are about creating an environment where you can ask and wrestle with the questions that life challenges us with.

Move gradually forward in your prayer life, expecting people to grow. Appreciate progress and anticipate change. I don’t pray the same way today I did ten years ago. I’m sure I won’t be praying the same way ten years from now. Prayer is a way to grow closer to God and to others. As you grow, you change. Well our Free Trial went very well. Tim gave us some insight into what a Faith at Home Coaching Session will be. He also shared his “PeanutButter” and Sticky Faith – great stuff.

Write these commandments that I’ve given you today on your hearts. Get them inside of you and then get them inside your children. Talk about them wherever you are sitting at home or walking in the street, talk about them from the time you get up in the morning to when you fall into bed at night.
